Our Objectives
Mestre Suassuna has always stated that a capoeirsta must be like a chameleon in that he/she must have the ability to adapt to whatever the situation and environment. In keeping with that idea, we train all aspects of capoeira – Angola, Regional, and Miudinho. We also train and keep with the traditional dances associated with capoeira.
We use the trainings inherent to the art of capoeira to develop our mind, body, and spirit. We also use capoeira to strengthen our friendships and enrich our lives - in our immediate community and beyond.
Class Structure
With the exception of those classes that focus on the traditional dances associated with capoeira, each training session will emphasize the common aspects of attack and evasion (defense). These aspects will include - though are not limited to - kicks, escapes, counter attacks, ground mobility techniques, movement sequences and music. The majority of classes will end with a "Roda" (capoeira circle) where two capoeiristas (capoeira practitioner) utilize the training philosophies in practical movement. The "Roda" situation develops each capoeirstas' ability to anticipate their opponent's movements as well as their ability to react effectively for either the purpose of escaping or countering an attack. If you're curious to see more of what capoeira looks like, visit our gallery section and watch a video.
Capoeira is much more than just a martial art. It is a fantastic culture complete with a wonderfully rich history, deep oral tradition, and philosophical outlooks on life that can apply to any common day situation. Also, part of becoming a capoeirista involves learning to play the instruments and singing traditional songs. As a tangential benefit of this, you will learn the language of Brazil.
